West Ham sack head coach Julen Lopetegui after eight months in charge
West Ham United has parted ways with head coach Julen Lopetegui after just eight months at the helm, with former Chelsea manager Graham Potter in line to take over.
During Lopetegui’s time in charge, the Hammers managed to secure only six victories in the Premier League.
The team’s recent 4-1 loss to Manchester City marked their ninth defeat in 20 league matches this season, leaving them in 14th place, a mere seven points clear of the relegation zone.
Discussions have already begun with Potter regarding a potential short-term contract to step into the role.
In an official statement, West Ham expressed, “The first half of the 2024/25 season has not met the club’s ambitions, prompting the decision to take action in alignment with our goals.”
The club also confirmed that the search for a new manager is currently underway.
Lopetegui took charge at the London Stadium in May, succeeding David Moyes after his contract expired at the end of the 2023/24 season.
Additionally, the club has dismissed Lopetegui’s entire coaching staff, which includes assistant Pablo Sanz, head of performance Oscar Caro, head analyst Juan Vicente Peinado, fitness coach Borja De Alba, and technical coach Edu Rubio.
“The board wishes to extend its gratitude to Julen and his staff for their dedication during their time with the Hammers and wishes them success in their future endeavors,” the statement concluded.
The search for a new manager is actively in progress.
