A statue of the Virgin Mary has reportedly been filmed shedding tears during a church service in Colombia—just two days before the Pope’s death, sparking global reactions and claims of a miracle.
The event took place on Good Friday, April 18, at the St. John Eudes Parish in Aguas Claras, located in the department of Norte de Santander. The video, which has since gone viral on social media, appears to show tears running down the statue’s face during a solemn service known as the Sermon of the Seven Words.
The Sermon of the Seven Words refers to the final seven statements made by Jesus Christ during his crucifixion, as recorded in the New Testament. It is a significant part of Good Friday observances in many Christian communities.
In the widely shared video, worshippers are seen reacting emotionally as the statue appears to cry. Many have described the scene as “supernatural” and “divine.”

One viewer commented under the video:
“It’s a miracle, how beautiful.”
Another wrote:
“She’s really crying.”
Speculations have also emerged regarding the meaning of the alleged phenomenon. A third commenter suggested:
“It’s a sign that God doesn’t like human evil, and that’s why our mother cries in silence.”
The local Diocese in the nearby town of Ocaña has yet to release an official statement on the reported incident. Church officials have not confirmed whether an investigation into the claims is underway.
Though some are skeptical, attributing the effect to lighting, moisture, or camera angles, many others have taken it as a powerful symbol of divine sorrow—especially given the timing, which coincides closely with the passing of Pope Francis, who reportedly died two days later.
As the footage continues to circulate, it has reignited debates around Marian apparitions and religious miracles, especially within the Catholic faithful.
