Video: My father influenced my annual orphanage donations – Davido
Nigerian superstar Davido, who has received a Grammy nomination, recently opened up about the profound influence his father’s guidance had on his decision to make annual donations to orphanages.
During an appearance on The Morning Hustle podcast, he reminisced about the moment in 2021 when he shared his account number on his birthday, resulting in an overwhelming response from fans who contributed nearly $400,000.
Davido revealed that his father advised him not to keep the funds for himself, which led him to generously donate the entire sum to a home for abandoned children.
This selfless gesture not only made a significant impact but also established a heartfelt tradition, as Davido has continued to use his own resources to support orphanages each year.
He said: “I tweeted my account number randomly on Twitter on my birthday, and my fans ended up sending me close to $400,000. I was thinking about what to do with it.
“My dad called me and said, ‘You know you can’t keep that money, right?’ I was like, ‘What? What do you mean I can’t keep my money? It’s my money.
“I gave it all away to the motherless babies’ homes. We did that the first and second years, back to back. The first year, it was the donations, the next year I used my own money. I also used my money this year.
“It’s something we’ve been doing every year with the foundation, and we hope for it to get bigger. There are about 500 orphanages. I met people who told me they were beneficiaries. Imagine all those people praying for you.”
Davido’s foundation has made significant contributions to orphanages throughout Nigeria, reportedly donating N251 million to 292 orphanages in 2021, followed by N237 million to more than 400 orphanages in 2023, and an impressive N300 million in both February and November of 2024.
He shared his appreciation for being able to create a meaningful difference in the lives of these children.
