TV personality Judge Mathis sued for allegedly threatening to shoot city worker
Television judge Greg Mathis is currently embroiled in a lawsuit filed by a city worker from Los Angeles, who alleges that the judge threatened him with a firearm during a tense encounter outside Mathis’ residence in July 2023.
According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, Ricardo Acosta, an employee of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), claims that Mathis became furious when a dump truck obstructed his driveway. Acosta states that after getting out of his vehicle, Mathis began yelling obscenities and insisted that the truck be moved.
Acosta asserts that he advised Mathis to keep his distance from the truck for safety, as it was parked on an incline and could potentially roll back. In response, Acosta alleges that Mathis reacted aggressively, challenging him to “run him over and see what happens,” before going inside his home and returning with a gun.
The lawsuit claims that Mathis displayed the weapon and threatened to “bust a cap,” a phrase Acosta says was repeated before Mathis eventually drove away. Acosta is now pursuing legal action for assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress, seeking damages.
Mathis’ attorney, Anahita Sedaghatfar, has dismissed the allegations, labeling the lawsuit as an attempt at extortion. She contends that Acosta’s account is inconsistent with the actual events, asserting that Mathis was acting out of fear for his safety due to Acosta’s behavior and that of others present.
Sedaghatfar also noted that the LAPD did not pursue an investigation into Acosta’s initial complaint, which she argues casts doubt on its validity. She indicated that if the case moves forward, Mathis intends to file countersuits against Acosta for defamation and unlawful conduct.
This lawsuit stems from a July 2023 incident, during which law enforcement sources confirmed that a complaint was lodged against Mathis for allegedly threatening LADWP workers with a gun. The long-time television personality has not yet publicly addressed the recent developments.
