Trump returns to White House, meets President Biden for transition meeting
United States President-elect Donald Trump has been welcomed to the White House by outgoing President Joe Biden as part of a traditional transition meeting.
On Wednesday, Trump met with President Biden at the White House, marking his first walk-in triumphantly in four years to see his counterpart.
Biden invited Trump for the traditional visit, a show of the coming Jan. 20 peaceful transfer of power in the American democracy between the current U.S. leader and the incoming chief executive.
However, the meeting between Biden and Trump was marred by political tension.
Biden, representing the Democratic Party in his reelection bid, had aimed to defeat Trump, the Republican incumbent, before his campaign ended in July, falling short in a debate that hurt his chances.
Biden quickly endorsed his vice president, Kamala Harris, to succeed him.
In the end, despite Biden’s electoral victory over Trump in 2020, Trump did not extend an invitation to meet him at the White House in advance of the inauguration. He also left Washington, two hours before Biden’s inauguration ceremony at the U.S. Capitol.
