Trump fires first woman to head a US military service
The first woman to head a branch of the U.S. military, Admiral Linda Fagan, has been removed from her role as the leader of the Coast Guard by President Donald Trump’s administration.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees the Coast Guard, has yet to issue a statement regarding her dismissal.
However, a senior official cited by Fox News indicated that Fagan’s alleged shortcomings influenced the decision in addressing border security issues, an overemphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, and a perceived decline in trust related to the Coast Guard’s management of s*xual assault cases.
On his first day back in office, Trump declared a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border, emphasizing his commitment to border security and his criticism of diversity programs.
In a message to the Coast Guard, acting DHS Secretary Benjamine Huffman recognized Fagan’s contributions, saying, “She served a long and illustrious career, and I thank her for her service to our nation.”
Fagan had been at the helm of the Coast Guard since 2022, having previously served as its vice commandant. Her impressive career spanned all seven continents, with assignments in locations ranging from Antarctica’s Ross Island to cities like Tokyo and Geneva. Notably, her biography, which showcased her achievements, has been removed from the Coast Guard’s website.
