Stop using saccharine and bromate in bread production – NAFDAC warns
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a cautionary notice to bakeries throughout Nigeria, urging them to refrain from using saccharin and bromate in their bread-making processes. This warning was delivered by the agency’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, during a recent News Forum appearance.
Prof. Adeyeye stressed that bakeries found utilizing these harmful substances would face serious repercussions. “This is where our post-marketing surveillance comes into play. We conduct regular checks for specific products, often prompted by complaints received through our reform office,” she explained.
She pointed out that NAFDAC has already taken decisive action against bakeries that have been found using bromate in their bread. “We have shut down several bakeries for incorporating bromate in their production. If we discover this, or if someone suspects or tastes the bread and finds bromate, we will close the bakery immediately,” she asserted.
Additionally, Prof. Adeyeye noted that NAFDAC has also closed multiple water production facilities due to poor quality or unsanitary conditions. “Our Regulatory Inspection Directorate is crucial because it ensures that what is presented to us at the registration stage remains consistent in the market. During initial inspections, we collect samples and test the products,” she elaborated.
She further highlighted that some businesses may change their production methods or formulas after their products have been registered. “Sometimes, once they know their product is registered, they begin altering the production process or formula. This is why ongoing post-marketing surveillance is essential. It guarantees that what was initially approved is still what is available in the market, thereby maintaining standards. This is what we refer to as market control,” she concluded.
