Some internet human rights advocates in Nigeria are corrupt – Force PRO Adejobi
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated on Wednesday that some online human rights activists in the country are involved in corruption.
He also highlighted that cyber crime is a significant issue that Nigeria is currently grappling with.
The Police image maker addressed the 2024 lecture series organized by the Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) in Asaba.
Adejobi mentioned that certain online activists have compromised their integrity as human rights advocates through their actions.
“They appear on social media platforms singing their own praises claiming to have recovered monies from some security agents,” he said.
“In the real sense some percentages of the money they claimed to have recovered from Policemen and other security agents go into their pockets but no one is talking about.”
Adejobi further expressed concern about the prevalent issues in the online space, including cyber bullying, romance scams, internet fraud, cyber prostitution, and other criminal activities.
The Police spokesman expressed concern that so many youths use their God given knowledge the wrong way by engaging in cyber crime, which he said is an offence in line with the Cyber Crime 2015 Act(2024) as amended
He also brought to light instances where internet fraudsters impersonate officers to defraud them, by cloning their accounts to collect payments.
Adejobi called for journalists, particularly those in online media, to ensure the accuracy of their reporting through the confirmation of facts, as failing to do so would be in direct contradiction to the provisions of the Cyber Crime Act.
Regarding the lecture’s theme, “Security Challenges: Finding local implementable solutions,” Adejobi noted the myriad security challenges facing Nigeria.
