Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas, is currently meeting with the House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee after multiple postponements, marking a significant step in the ongoing political crisis in the state.
The closed-door session signals the lawmakers’ decision to exercise their constitutional right to take over the functions of the Rivers State House of Assembly, following the declaration of emergency rule in the state. This move is part of the federal government’s effort to address the political instability that has gripped the state.
During his appearance at the meeting, Ibas apologized for his absence from previous sessions and requested additional time to prepare for his briefing to the committee. He explained that he is still adjusting to his new role and sought the committee’s understanding during this transitional period.
Journalists were excused from the meeting as it shifted to a private session, a move that underscores the sensitive nature of the ongoing developments in the state’s governance.
President Bola Tinubu appointed Ibas as Sole Administrator of Rivers State after declaring emergency rule in the region. This appointment came in the wake of the suspension of Governor Sim Fubara and other state officials, including the deputy governor and members of the state House of Assembly. The suspension was a direct result of the escalating political tensions between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
The rift between Fubara and Wike has had far-reaching implications on the political landscape in Rivers State, prompting federal intervention. As the crisis continues, the outcome of Ibas’ meetings with lawmakers could play a crucial role in shaping the state’s future governance.
