The Federal Government has officially reopened the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu today, April 28, 2025, after a temporary closure for urgent runway repairs.
The airport was shut down on April 18, 2025, following a major rupture discovered on the runway surface. Initially, authorities had projected the repairs would be completed by May 6, but the work was finished ahead of schedule, allowing for the early resumption of flight operations.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the runway is now fully operational and safe for use. In a statement, FAAN expressed its appreciation to the public for their patience during the disruption and apologized for any inconvenience caused by the closure.
“We are pleased to announce that repairs have been completed and the runway at Akanu Ibiam International Airport is now open for flight operations,” FAAN stated. “We deeply appreciate the understanding and cooperation of the public throughout this period.”
The reopening of the Enugu airport is expected to significantly restore vital air connectivity to the southeastern region of Nigeria, which had been temporarily disrupted by the runway issues. For many travelers, especially those heading to and from the Southeast for business, education, and family visits, the resumption of flights brings a huge relief.
Akanu Ibiam International Airport remains a critical gateway for the region, offering both domestic and international flight services.
