Nanny gets $2,780,000 after boss secretly filmed her with camera hidden in smoke alarm
A live-in nanny has been awarded £2million after her fast food mogul boss secretly recorded nude videos of her by hiding a camera inside a smoke detector.
Andrade, 25, filed a lawsuit against Esposito, a 35-year-old father of four, for his actions during her tenure as a live-in nanny in his New York City home.
Esposito, the father of four, was arrested following the incident after Andrade reported him for attempting to force his way into her apartment after discovering the camera and the memory card filled with “hundreds” of clips.
In a recent trial in Manhattan, a jury has found Esposito and his wife Danielle guilty of emotional distress, awarding Andrade $780,000 in damages. Additionally, they have ordered him to pay $2,000,000 in punitive damages, marking a significant milestone in the case.
Esposito, who owns three LaRosa Grill franchises, was taken into custody on suspicion of illegal surveillance, which carries a maximum sentence of four years.
But he was allowed to walk free on the condition he completes two years of probation and counselling.
Ms Andrade’s attorney previously described the punishment as a “slap on the wrist”.
Speaking to the New York Post, the nanny said: “It’s not enough for the whole situation I’ve been through these three years. It’s not enough.
“I was angry because the damage that he caused me is irreversible.”
In her lawsuit, the Colombian national recounted spending hundreds of hours undergoing training after being employed by Cultural Care Au Pair and dispatched to work in the US.
She expressed her excitement about the chance to learn English while working in America.
However, her enthusiasm waned when she noticed Esposito frequently adjusting the smoke detector in the bedroom they provided her, remarking that it was “constantly being repositioned.”
After several weeks on the job, she decided to investigate the device more closely and discovered a hidden camera inside.
She recounted the harrowing experience of having to flee through a window as Esposito returned home and began pounding on her door.
The lawsuit stated that the police eventually discovered “hundreds of recordings” containing footage of her engaging in “nude/dressing/undressing.”
