MTN Sued for N1bn in Osun
Osun State has lodged a lawsuit seeking N1 billion against MTN, alleging defamation due to the publication of false information by the telecommunications giant regarding the state.
The High Court of Osun State is currently hearing this legal action, under case number HOS/99/2024.
Furthermore, it was gathered that Morenike George-Taylor, Global Transactions Nigeria Limited, the sole consultant assigned to the Osun State government for telecommunications infrastructure projects, has initiated legal proceedings against MTN for violations of the Osun State Environmental Protection Law 2022.
She mentioned that the issue was reported to the Osun State police, and a petition is currently pending.
Despite these ongoing legal disputes, George-Taylor highlighted that MTN cables are still being installed across the state.
In response to these developments, letters have been dispatched to the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Federal House of Assembly, and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), setting the stage for a significant case against the Critical National Infrastructure Bill, enacted in June 2024.
She underscored that telecommunications companies are not excused from paying their taxes by invoking legal loopholes.
As the case progresses, Osun State remains committed to seeking justice and holding MTN accountable for its actions, while also ensuring adherence to local laws.
