Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum took aim at Donald Trump’s proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico, suggesting instead that the United States could be referred to as “Mexican America.”
Her comments were a direct response to Trump’s announcement that he intends to call the Gulf the “Gulf of America.”
During a morning press briefing, Sheinbaum showcased a 17th-century world map that labeled North America as “Mexican America.”
She emphasized that the Gulf of Mexico is a name recognized internationally by the United Nations and cleverly turned Trump’s reasoning back on him. “Why not call the United States Mexican America? It has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?” she remarked.
Sheinbaum further noted that while Trump initiated the conversation about names, Mexico could also participate in this dialogue, expressing optimism about maintaining “good relations” with the new U.S. president.
Trump, who is set to take office again on January 20, had expressed his desire to rename the Gulf, claiming, “the Gulf of America has a beautiful ring.” He defended his proposal by saying, “It’s fitting. And Mexico needs to stop letting millions of people flood into our country.”
In response to Trump’s assertion that drug cartels control Mexico, Sheinbaum firmly stated, “In Mexico, the people are in charge.”
As Trump prepares for his return to the presidency, he has consistently targeted Mexico, threatening to impose significant tariffs on imports unless the country curbs the flow of illegal migrants and drugs. He has also revived plans from his first term to label Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations.
