Masked men disrupt Labour Party meeting in Abia
A meeting of the Labour Party in Aba was thrown into disarray on Saturday, October 19, when over 20 masked men disrupted it, believed to be police officers. They barged into the venue and ordered the members to keep quiet.
The disturbance took place as the party was gearing up for the crucial November 2 local government elections.
Eyewitnesses report that five of these masked men approached Prince G.O. Ndubueze, the Secretary of the Labour Party’s Local Government Election Committee, claimed him to be under arrest. In response, the members of the Labour Party resisted the arrest, asking the men to produce a warrant for his arrest, which they were unable to provide.
In response, more than 500 Labour Party members joined Prince Ndubueze in protesting against the arrest. They marched him and a group of supporters to the Aba Area Police Command, where he was detained for further questioning. In an interview with Vanguard, Prince Ndubueze voiced his opposition, accusing Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, of trying to force candidates onto the local government ballots.
“I didn’t get any warrant of arrest from anywhere. I don’t even know whether they are policemen, but as a law-abiding citizen, I’m going with the police. But I will never bow to intimidation from Gov. Alex Otti. We won’t allow him to impose candidates in this local government election,” Ndubueze said.
“This is a governor who came to power through a legitimate election but now wants to impose candidates. The Labour Party in Abia state won’t tolerate imposition,” he added.
