Man wakes up during funeral after being declared by doctors
An Indian man narrowly escaped being cremated alive after he awoke on a funeral pyre mere moments before it was set ablaze, following a doctor’s failure to conduct a postmortem examination, medical officials reported on Saturday, November 23.
As a result, three doctors have been suspended.
The incident took place Thursday when Rohitash, who had been living in a shelter home for the last one month, was brought to Rajkiya Bhagwan Das Khetan (BDK) District Hospital, Jhunjhunu, after his health suddenly deteriorated. At the hospital, he was declared dead by doctors.
According to the officials, the body was supposed to undergo a postmortem, but instead, it was released for cremation. During the cremation rituals, when the body was on the pyre, Rohitash woke up. He was subsequently taken to BDK, and then to SMS Hospital in Jaipur, where he passed away a day later.
Jhunjhunu SP Sharad Chouodhary stated, “On Thursday, the young man’s health rapidly declined, and he was rushed to the hospital. There were no immediate family members present. The doctors were tasked with conducting a postmortem on the youth, but they neglected this duty. Instead, they merely completed the necessary paperwork and sent him for cremation. When the body was on the pyre, Rohitash woke up.”
District Collector Ramavtar Meena has established a committee to investigate the doctors’ conduct and has appointed an Additional District Magistrate to scrutinize the hospital’s operations.
“Doctors Yogesh Jhkhar, Navneet Meel and Sandeep Prachar are suspended for gross misconduct. They did not perform a postmortem and sent the man for cremation. We have asked for a report from the medical department soon,” said Meena.
