Man remanded for impregnating daughter
A Magistrate Court in Calabar on Friday remanded Mallam Adamu Ibrahim Umaru, 48, to prison custody for allegedly raping and impregnating his 15-year-old daughter.
The accused, a native of Bundugudu Local Government Area in Zamfara State, was living at No. 27 Edem Odo Street in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, and was known to have carnal knowledge of his daughter.
Chief Magistrate Mercy Ene led the court following a hearing on the expert motion filed by the Police Prosecutor, O. S. Umoren.
Umoren argued that the expert motion was necessary to ensure the defendant remained in custody until the investigation into the matter was completed.
The motion was filed in accordance with sections 4 of the Police Act 2020 and the Cross River State Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2016.
However, the defendant’s counsel, Mohammed Shaibu, opposed the motion, citing that he was not properly served with the motion prior to his client’s arraignment.
In response, the Chief Magistrate granted the motion, which included eight paragraphs, and adjourned the case to December 3.
