Bayer Leverkusen has admitted it may allow Xabi Alonso to leave under a special “gentleman’s agreement” if one of his former clubs, including Real Madrid, comes calling.
Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro revealed the understanding during a press briefing on Monday, as speculation continues to mount over Alonso’s future. The Spanish tactician has been heavily linked with a return to the Bernabéu, where he played under José Mourinho and won the UEFA Champions League as a midfield maestro.
“We have a gentleman’s agreement with Xabi Alonso,” Carro said. “If a team he’s played for comes along, we can sit down and talk. We’re prepared for any eventuality.”
The 42-year-old has emerged as a top managerial prospect in world football after guiding Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga title-winning campaign — their first in history. With Carlo Ancelotti’s future at Real Madrid uncertain, Alonso is widely viewed as the frontrunner to take over the reins at the Spanish giants.
Leverkusen had initially signed Alonso in October 2022, and extended his contract until 2026, hoping to build a long-term project. However, Carro confirmed that club executives were always aware that Alonso’s rapid rise would attract attention from elite clubs — especially those he once played for.
“We signed him knowing he would become a great coach. Extending his contract was a sign of confidence, but we also sleep peacefully, knowing anything can happen.”
Alonso enjoyed a glittering playing career, representing Real Sociedad, Eibar (on loan), Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich. His potential return to Madrid this time as a manager — would mark a dramatic homecoming and a new era for Los Blancos.
For now, Xabi Alonso remains focused on finishing the season with Leverkusen, who are still unbeaten in all competitions and are chasing a potential treble, with the DFB-Pokal final and UEFA Europa League in sight.
