Leaders don’t run away — Fashola advises youth against ‘japa’
Former Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, has implored Nigerian youths to stay within the country and pursue leadership roles instead of seeking opportunities abroad, despite Nigeria’s current economic challenges.
Speaking at the 8th and 9th convocation ceremonies of Elizade University in Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State, Fashola underscored the importance of resilience and commitment to the nation.
He highlighted the growing trend among young Nigerians to emigrate in search of better prospects, often referred to as “Japa.” However, Fashola encouraged young Nigerians to stay and make meaningful contributions to their homeland. “Why did Mrs. Folorunso Alakija not flee? Why did Chief Tunde Afolabi, who has made significant contributions to Nigeria, not leave? Why are they still here?” he questioned.
Fashola pointed to several successful Nigerians who chose to remain despite facing hardships, emphasizing that “leaders do not flee in the face of adversity.” He urged the graduates to embrace the responsibilities that come with leadership roles, noting, “There were challenging times when Chief Ade-Ojo was at the University of Nigeria, but Ade-Ojo did not depart. If he had left, there would be no Elizade University.”
Michael Ade-Ojo, the founder of Elizade University, expressed pride in the institution’s mission to support Nigeria’s educational needs by producing skilled graduates. “My vision has always been to deliver world-class education right here in Nigeria,” Ade-Ojo stated, adding that he is pleased with the progress of the university.
