Lawyer sues Tinubu, asks court to stop Egbetokun from parading himself as IGP
A lawyer and human rights activist from Abuja, Maxwell Opara, has initiated legal proceedings against President Bola Tinubu for allegedly extending the tenure of Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun.
In seeking a halt to Egbetokun’s inauguration as IGP by the Federal High Court in Abuja, Opara is asserting that Mr. Egbetokun is no longer fit to serve as IGP due to reaching the age of 60 on September 4, 2024.
Following the controversy surrounding the tenure of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force spokesperson, clarified on Friday that the tenure extension was not granted by President Buhari.
He explained that instead, the President had approved the law governing the tenure of the office as mandated.
However, Opara requested the court to rule that an appointment terminated by operation of law cannot be retroactively reinstated by a subsequent amended law.
A date for the hearing of the case has not yet been set.
