“It isn’t cool back home, the economy is in shambles” – Davido advises Black Americans against moving to Africa
Award-winning Afrobeats star Davido has issued a stern warning to black Americans against relocating to Africa.
During an interview on the Big Homies House podcast, Davido shared his perspective on the increasing trend among African Americans to move to Africa. He warned against such decisions, explaining that, according to him, such a move isn’t advisable due to the poor state of the economy. Davido highlighted the issue of African citizens overpaying for domestic oil compared to imported quantities, illustrating the country’s economic struggles.
However, Davido clarified that his intention was not to cast Africa in a negative light. Instead, he aimed to showcase the country’s better aspects, moving beyond its economic challenges. Davido emphasized that the entertainment sector is serving as a positive distraction, allowing Africa to present a more favorable image.
“It’s not cool back home. The economy now is in shambles”.
Davido’s remarks have sparked a heated debate on social media, with some agreeing with his perspective, while others criticized him for painting Africa in an unfavorable light.
Comments ranged from support, such as, “Davido is right. It’s not the place to live.” to criticism, such as, “His views are too negative for a country he calls home.”
Davido, when reflecting on his growth as an African artist and its global impact, noted that ten years ago, identifying as Nigerian among foreigners was not common, due to the tendency for many Africans to falsely claim Jamaican heritage. He observed a shift in the appreciation of African culture, acknowledging his role in this change.
