IGP bans Amotekun and vigilante corps from participating in Ondo election
In preparation for the upcoming November 16 governorship election in Ondo State, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has issued a ban on the participation of the Western Nigeria Security Network, also known as Amotekun, along with other vigilante groups, in the election’s security efforts.
In a statement released on Sunday by Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, the police chief underscored that the responsibility for securing the election will solely rest with federal security agencies.
To guarantee a peaceful electoral process, the IGP has directed the mobilization of officers from various specialized police units, including the Special Intervention Squad, Police Mobile Force, Counter-Terrorism Unit, Special Protection Unit, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, and K-9 Unit. Furthermore, aerial patrols will be conducted using police helicopters, and gunboats will patrol waterways and riverine areas to ensure security across all terrains.
IGP Egbetokun has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to a secure and orderly election across all 18 local government areas, 203 wards, and 3,933 polling units in Ondo State. “The deployment will witness officers from various specialized units collaborating closely with other security agencies, all in strict compliance with the Electoral Act, 2022, to ensure that all actions are conducted with fairness, transparency, and order,” Adejobi stated.
Highlighting a firm stance against any attempts to disrupt the electoral process, the IGP warned that any individuals or groups, including political thugs, who seek to incite violence will face the full extent of the law. Adejobi emphasized, “those who seek to undermine the peace and security of the state will not be left unpunished.”
