A controversial scene unfolded in Kano State as the Hisbah Board swiftly moved to dismantle a makeshift ‘holy site’ that had become a pilgrimage hotspot for hundreds of Muslim faithful.
The site, located near the Dakata Industrial Area, attracted crowds after claims surfaced that a muddy footprint found at the location belonged to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Videos circulated online showed people trooping to the area to drink, bathe, and collect the muddy water, convinced it held miraculous healing powers.
The moral police, however, condemned the gathering as dangerous and baseless. According to Deputy Commander Muhahideen Aminudeen, the board acted immediately upon receiving reports of the incident.
“Some mischief makers circulated this bogus story that the place is a holy site where the Prophet set foot,” Aminudeen said. “Unfortunately, many people who lack sound knowledge of Islam were misled.”
He clarified that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) never visited the African continent during his lifetime, let alone Kano, dismissing the claims as false and misleading.
The so-called pilgrimage site reportedly emerged after recent railway development in the area revealed a muddy imprint, which some interpreted as sacred. Witnesses say water had begun seeping from the ground, which further fueled the belief that it was divinely touched.
“This kind of misinformation can lead people astray and even pose health risks,” Aminudeen warned. “We deployed officers to the scene to educate the people and dismantle the site to prevent further harm.”
He further cautioned that the water from the site could be contaminated due to its proximity to industrial activities, making it potentially dangerous for consumption.
The Hisbah Board has launched an investigation into the source of the viral claim and urged religious leaders and parents to educate their followers and children with authentic Islamic teachings to prevent similar incidents.
The viral video of the incident has sparked widespread debate on social media, with many Nigerians questioning the role of spiritual manipulation and the dangers of blind belief in unverified religious claims.
