Former US President, Jimmy Carter casts early vote for Kamala Harris
Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter cast his ballot in the U.S. election on Wednesday, October 16, just fifteen days after turning 100.
This marks the fulfillment of a long-standing wish to live long enough to vote for Kamala Harris.
The former Democratic leader cast his vote by mail, as reported by the Carter Center, the nonprofit he established after leaving the White House in 1981 to pursue his vision of world diplomacy.
Although election day is November 5, Carter made the most of early voting in his home state of Georgia, where he is currently receiving hospice care.
Carter had previously shared with his family earlier this year that his desire to live long enough to vote for Harris and to help her defeat her Republican rival, Donald Trump, was more important to him than reaching his 100th birthday, as reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
More than 420,000 people have already cast their ballots since the early voting period began on Tuesday, October 15, in Georgia, according to Gabriel Sterling, a state election official who shared the figures at midday.
Carter, a one-term president, has been receiving end-of-life care in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, since February last year.
The former peanut farmer who climbed his way to the White House, is the first former U.S. president to reach the 100-year milestone.
