FG tells Nigerians to move from riverbanks due to flooding
The Federal Government, via the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), has issued a directive to Nigerians living near river banks in the River Benue Basin to seek safer locations.
In a press release on Thursday, October 17, Umar Mohammed, the Director General of NIHSA, cautioned that the River Benue has reached a flooding stage due to heightened rainfall.
He further advised residents along the River Niger to evacuate to safer areas, as the authorities at Kainji and Jebba Dams are actively managing floodwaters.
The NIHSA Director emphasized the importance of cooperation with emergency management agencies and collective efforts to enhance Nigeria’s resilience against flooding and mitigate its impact.
In recent developments, the government has issued a warning for Nigerians to move to safer areas following the discharge of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon. This comes after the Alau Dam in Cameroon overflowed, resulting in the loss of over 30 lives and displacing thousands of homes in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
