Erik ten Hag sacked as Manchester United manager
Premier League club Manchester United has announced the sacking of Erik ten Hag as the club’s manager, according to a statement released on Monday.
Ten Hag was informed on Monday morning , October 28 by the club’s hierarchy including chief executive Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox, to recommend a change and leaves Old Trafford after two and a half years in charge with his final game proving to be the Premier League defeat to West Ham United on Sunday.
The result placed the club in 14th position in the table, seven points adrift of the Champions League qualification spots. Despite this, the team had only won three out of nine games in the league and four out of a total of 14 matches across all competitions.
In response, the club has appointed former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was brought in the offseason to work alongside Ten Hag, to take over as interim manager. The rest of the management team will remain in their current positions for the time being.
A statement on Manchester United’s social media pages on Monday confirmed the news, which read: “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.
“Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”
Ten Hag was retained as United manager in the summer following an end-of-season review, which saw the team finish in eighth place in the Premier League, the club’s lowest finish since 1990, and a victory in the FA Cup final against rivals Manchester City.
The club exercised a one-year extension option in Ten Hag’s contract at the beginning of July, extending his tenure until 2025, the original end date of his contract.
