EFCC arrests fake nurse over alleged N28.2m fraud in Enugu
The Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) convened before Justice Mohammed Garba Umar of the Federal High Court in Independence Layout, Enugu State, to arraign Blessing Amaka David-Agwa, who has been accused of being a fraudulent fertility nurse.
She faces 45 charges, including fraudulent impersonation, forgery, and obtaining property by false pretenses worth N28,278,600.
Blessing Amaka David-Agwa has pleaded not guilty to all counts. In light of her plea, her counsel, Blessing N. Obasi of the EFCC, has requested a trial date and asked for her to be remanded at the Enugu State Correctional Facility.
Defense counsel, G. C. Madubuegwu, informed the court on October 4, 2024, about a pending motion for bail, which was filed on the same date.
“It is brought pursuant to Section 162 and 165 (1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ” he said.
Following the filing of the application, he requested the court to grant the defendant bail on liberal terms.
However, Obasi strongly opposed the bail application, arguing that the allegations against the defendant were serious, particularly highlighting the mental health of the victims.
After considering both arguments, Justice Umar adjourned the matter to November 12, 2024, to make a decision on the bail application.
Subsequently, the defendant was remanded at the Enugu State Correctional Facility.
