Popular Nigerian musician Daddy Showkey has expressed his displeasure with the recent directive issued by the governor of Niger State, Umar Bago, to arrest individuals with dreadlocks as part of a security measure to curb insecurity in Minna, the state capital.
Governor Umar Bago made the controversial statement during a security meeting in Minna on Tuesday. He justified the decision by claiming that it was necessary to tackle the resurgence of insecurity in the state. The governor’s directive has sparked a wave of criticism, with many questioning the rationale behind targeting individuals based on their appearance rather than focusing on the root causes of crime.
In response to the directive, Daddy Showkey, who is known for his signature dreadlocks, took to Instagram to challenge the governor’s decision. He expressed his concern about whether dreadlocks were truly the cause of insecurity in the state, asking if there was any logical connection between the two.
In a witty post, Showkey threatened to cancel his scheduled trip to Niger State and humorously challenged Governor Bago to first shave his own beard before attempting to cut off the hair of others. Showkey wrote: “Mohammed Umar na Dada be your problem? I dey come to Minna but now that you asked your security agents to cut off dreadlocks, so hold your state but make you cut your beer beer.”
This incident has reignited the ongoing debate surrounding the criminalization of certain styles of hair, particularly dreadlocks, in various parts of Nigeria. Many believe that such measures unfairly target individuals based on their appearance and perpetuate stereotypes, rather than addressing the actual causes of insecurity, such as poverty, unemployment, and the lack of effective law enforcement.
Daddy Showkey’s criticism highlights the need for a more nuanced approach to combating insecurity, one that does not involve penalizing individuals for their personal choices or appearance.
