Adefowora Abiodun, one of the key suspects linked to the controversial Crypto Bridge Exchange (CBEX) scheme, has voluntarily surrendered to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) amid an ongoing probe into a $1 billion cryptocurrency fraud.
According to a statement by the EFCC, Abiodun reported to their Abuja headquarters at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 28, accompanied by legal counsel. The agency had declared Abiodun and seven others wanted last week in connection with a massive fraudulent investment scheme targeting unsuspecting Nigerians through the CBEX platform.
Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja had previously authorized the arrest and detention of the suspects, following an application from the EFCC. In his ruling, Justice Nwite said:
“I have listened to the submission of learned counsel for the applicant (EFCC). I have also gone through the affidavit evidence and exhibits, along with the written address. I am satisfied that the application is meritorious and hereby grant it as prayed.”
Babatunde Busari, Esq., counsel to Abiodun, told reporters that his client turned himself in to cooperate with the authorities and set the record straight about his role in the scheme.
“He is ready to assist in the investigation and clarify misconceptions in the media,” Busari stated.
The EFCC is expected to continue interrogations in the coming days as it works toward unraveling the complex operations behind CBEX, which has left thousands of Nigerian investors in financial turmoil.
