A Catholic nursery school in Treviso, northern Italy, has terminated the employment of Elena Maraga, a 29-year-old teacher, after it emerged that she operated an account on the adult content platform OnlyFans.
The controversy began when the father of one of Maraga’s students allegedly purchased images from her profile and later distributed them within a football group. The teacher claims the situation escalated after the man’s wife discovered the content.
Maraga, who had taught at the nursery for five years, was suspended without pay in mid-March after refusing to shut down her account. Despite a petition signed by 30 parents supporting her and efforts from a local trade union to block disciplinary action, she was officially dismissed on Tuesday.
In a statement reported by ANSA, the school justified the decision by saying Maraga’s actions “contrast with the Catholic inspiration that guides the educational direction of the school,” and that her presence on the platform had “irreparably damaged the element of trust.”
Maraga criticized the decision, describing it as “100% unfair.” She stated that her extracurricular activity “never compromised” her work and insisted she maintained professionalism in the classroom. She also revealed financial pressure as her main reason for turning to OnlyFans, noting that her teaching salary of €1,200 per month was unsustainable.
“I like myself, I turned my passion for my body into a way to earn income. I don’t understand what the problem is,” she said. “I am not ashamed of what I do.”
The teacher has not yet confirmed whether she will pursue legal action but has expressed disappointment in the way the situation was handled. “They have always acted with letters and have never wanted dialogue,” she told Italian outlet Open.
Maraga claims some mothers have offered continued support and expressed their desire for her to return to the classroom. “There are some mothers who want to support me. They want me to continue teaching their children,” she added.
The case has sparked wider debate in Italy, with the Education Ministry reportedly preparing a new code of ethics that would prohibit teachers from appearing on platforms like OnlyFans.
Maraga, who holds a degree in Educational Sciences, said she began using OnlyFans out of curiosity and financial necessity, but noted that she made more money in a day than she did in a month of teaching.
“I love teaching children, it’s my calling,” she said. “But in one day [on OnlyFans], I earn a month’s salary.”
