Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is facing a serious health crisis after his condition worsened following recent surgery, according to doctors overseeing his care in Brasília.
Bolsonaro, who has been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at DF Star Hospital, is reportedly experiencing signs of “clinical deterioration.” Medical experts revealed concerning updates on Thursday, noting elevated blood pressure levels and worsening liver test results as major red flags.
A comprehensive set of diagnostic exams is currently underway to determine the next course of treatment.
This development comes in the wake of a surgical procedure earlier this month to address persistent intestinal issues—complications that trace back to a life-threatening stabbing attack during his 2018 presidential campaign. The incident left Bolsonaro with serious internal injuries, leading to multiple surgeries, including the removal of a colostomy bag in 2019 and subsequent treatments for intestinal blockages.
His most recent health scare reportedly began after he suffered severe abdominal pain while attending a political event in northeastern Brazil. The pain grew worse in the days that followed, prompting urgent medical attention and hospitalization just weeks before his scheduled trial over alleged efforts to overturn the 2022 presidential election.
Bolsonaro’s legal battles have kept him in the spotlight even after leaving office. In March, Brazil’s Supreme Court ruled that the former president must stand trial in connection with accusations of orchestrating a failed plot to challenge the election results that brought President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva back to power. Bolsonaro continues to deny any wrongdoing.
Despite his declining condition, Bolsonaro posted a photo earlier this week from his hospital bed, flashing a thumbs-up to his followers and thanking them for their continued prayers and support. The image, however, did little to ease concerns, especially after Thursday’s alarming update from his medical team.
Doctors say the 69-year-old will continue motor physiotherapy while being closely monitored for potential complications, including venous thrombosis—a condition he is now being treated for preventively.
As Bolsonaro remains in the ICU, political allies and supporters have taken to social media to send well-wishes, while critics remain focused on the looming court case and its potential political consequences.
Further updates on his condition are expected in the coming days as doctors assess the effectiveness of ongoing treatments.
