Tina Knowles, mother of global superstar Beyoncé, in a deeply personal revelation, has shared for the first time that she was diagnosed with breast cancer—a life-changing moment that she bravely kept private until now.
The emotional disclosure is featured in her brand-new book, Matriarch: A Memoir, where Knowles details the discovery, her reaction, and how Beyoncé played a key role in her healing journey.
According to the memoir, the diagnosis came during a long-overdue mammogram appointment that ultimately revealed a small cancerous tumor in her left breast. A larger mass in her right breast was thankfully benign, but doctors advised it be removed as well.
“My doctor told me I had breast cancer,” Knowles wrote. “A small tumour in my left breast that was cancerous; the larger tumour in my right breast was benign, but it would also have to go.”
She was diagnosed with Stage 1A breast cancer, which typically has a high survival rate when detected early. Despite the good prognosis, the moment was overwhelming—and yet, she waited until the very day she received the diagnosis to tell Beyoncé.
“She took it well, staying positive,” Knowles wrote. “I could already feel her mind racing, focusing on this as a task to tackle with precision.”
Knowles described her daughter’s immediate response as calm but proactive. Beyoncé sprang into action, organizing consultations with top medical professionals and ensuring her mother received world-class care.
“She would find me the top specialist, and I distinctly remember her telling me, ‘I want you to get a second opinion on whatever the course of treatment is’,” she added.
Beyoncé eventually lined up one of the top breast surgery specialists in the country, who provided a private consultation and oversaw the successful operation.
The surgery, which also included a breast reduction, led to a full recovery. Today, Knowles is cancer-free, and she’s now using her platform to encourage women to stay vigilant with regular screenings.
The powerful story adds yet another layer to Tina Knowles’ legacy—not just as the woman behind some of the biggest names in entertainment, but as a fighter and survivor in her own right.
