The Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) has underscored the importance of schools across the state adhering to the September 23, 2024, resumption date by guaranteeing that teachers are fully prepared to kick off academic activities.
This comes amidst ASUBEB’s directives for schools to refrain from employing students in the clearing of overgrown school compounds on the resumption day.
The Abia State government had postponed the resumption of schools from September 16 to September 23 because of last Monday’s Public Holiday.
Addressing a gathering of news reporters in Umuahia, Lydia Onuoha, the Executive Chairman of ASUBEB, cautioned that schools found to be in default would face severe penalties and urged parents, guardians, and school authorities alike to ensure their environments are prepared to welcome back the students.
She emphasized that the assignment of classes to teachers and other necessary preparations had been completed by the education authorities in all Local Government Areas (LGAs), in anticipation of the Monday resumption of teaching and learning.
Furthermore, Onuoha issued a warning to schools against employing school children as laborers.
“I also urge all schools to ensure that the school environment is cleared come Monday, September 23rd 2024. I also want to appeal to schools to desist from using children to clear bushes in the school. We have agreed that schools should make arrangements to engage the services of those that will help out with the clearing of their bushes in and around the school premises.”
Onuoha announced that the Board would be on random inspection visits to schools and LGA education authorities to ascertain the level of compliance with the directive.
She stated that education is the number one priority for Governor Alex Otti’s government.
