British media figure Piers Morgan has taken a sharp swipe at Michelle Obama after the former First Lady criticized the U.S. deportation policies under President Donald Trump, accusing them of being fueled by racism and bias.
Michelle Obama made the comments during a candid appearance on the ‘On Purpose with Jay Shetty’ podcast, where she shared her deep concerns about how immigrants and people of color were treated under the Trump administration.
During the interview, Michelle Obama said:
“There’s so much bias and so much racism and so much ignorance that fuels those kinds of choices. I worry for people of color all over this country, and I don’t know that we will have the advocates to protect everybody. And that … frightens me, it keeps me up at night.”
Her comments were in reference to Trump-era immigration crackdowns, family separations at the border, and the rhetoric often used around deportation and immigrants from certain regions of the world.
Not one to shy away from controversy, Piers Morgan responded on X (formerly Twitter) with a sharp rebuke of Obama’s statement. He brought up Barack Obama’s record on immigration, noting that the former president deported more than 3 million people during his two terms.
“Her husband was the greatest deporter in U.S. presidential history – kicking out 3m+ people in 8yrs. Did THAT keep her up at night?” Morgan wrote.
Morgan’s comment sparked a heated debate online, with some defending Michelle’s right to speak on current events and others backing Morgan’s callout of perceived hypocrisy.
While Michelle Obama’s comments targeted Trump-era policies, Piers Morgan’s remarks have reignited discussions around Barack Obama’s controversial nickname, “Deporter-in-Chief,” used by some immigrant rights activists due to his administration’s high deportation numbers.
Though Obama’s supporters argue that many deportations were of undocumented individuals with criminal records, critics argue that his administration still laid the foundation for the aggressive enforcement later intensified under Trump.
The clash underscores the continued political and cultural divide over U.S. immigration policies, with each side pointing fingers at the other for how undocumented immigrants have been treated.
Michelle Obama has long been known for her advocacy on inclusion and equality, while Piers Morgan has built a reputation for challenging progressive narratives and publicly calling out high-profile figures.
