Afrobeats star Rema has shared a bold take on Nigerian family dynamics, suggesting that parents are less likely to chastise children who contribute financially to the household.
The “Calm Down” hitmaker made the comment during a recent chat with content creator Enzo, who complained about his mother’s disapproval of certain lifestyle choices, including getting a tattoo and braiding his hair.
“My mum won’t let me get a tattoo,” Enzo says — Rema replies: “Wait till you cash out big”
During the conversation, Enzo explained that his mother once ignored him for days simply because he braided his hair.
Enzo: “My mum won’t let me get a tattoo. The time I did braids, she didn’t talk to me for days. It was bad.”
Rema responded with advice that has since gone viral on social media:
Rema: “Don’t worry, you just need to hustle a little bit more. Wait till you cash out big. Nigerian parents don’t advise breadwinners.”
This isn’t the first time Rema—born Divine Ikubor—has opened up about the pressure of providing for his family from a young age. The Mavin Records artist lost his father early in life and previously revealed that he became the breadwinner of his household in his teens.
He notably stated that he made his first million naira at 17 and gave the entire sum to his mother, highlighting the strong bond they share and the sacrifices he has made to support his family.
