Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has congratulated Nigerian chess master and social impact advocate Tunde Onakoya for his historic achievement in setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon at a staggering 64 hours.
The governor’s message came via a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, following global recognition of Onakoya’s incredible feat, achieved alongside U.S. chess partner Shawn Martinez in New York.
Sanwo-Olu described Onakoya’s achievement as more than a personal milestone, saying it symbolizes the resilience, discipline, and brilliance of Nigerian youth. He praised Tunde’s journey — from grassroots chess evangelism through the Chess in Slums Africa initiative to international acclaim.
“This is not just a personal achievement, but a proud moment for all of us,” the governor wrote.
“Tunde’s perseverance and commitment to the game truly inspire everyone around him, and this accomplishment highlights his incredible talent.”
In his message, the governor also recognized young chess prodigies who are emerging as stars in their own right. He gave a special mention to Ferdinand, a young boy whose passion for chess made a lasting impression when they met recently.

He went on to celebrate Jamiu Boluwatife, who won the ICN Chess Championship, and other outstanding participants in the Chess Tournament during the 2025 United Nations Games in New York.
“They all represent the best of our community,” Sanwo-Olu wrote, “and I am confident that they will continue to achieve great things in the future.”
Tunde Onakoya’s record-setting marathon wasn’t just about breaking barriers. It was a bold platform to raise funds and awareness for underprivileged children across Africa, many of whom have benefited from the Chess in Slums initiative he founded.
From coaching children under bridges in Lagos to now holding a world record recognized globally, Tunde’s story has captivated millions and ignited pride among Nigerians at home and abroad.
The Guinness World Records has now officially acknowledged the achievement: 64 continuous hours of chess, with Onakoya and Martinez displaying skill, endurance, and sheer willpower throughout the challenge in Times Square, New York.
The marathon not only tested their mental limits but also drew worldwide attention to how chess can transform lives, especially when paired with social advocacy.
With messages of congratulations pouring in from global chess bodies, celebrities, fans, and now Nigeria’s political leaders, Tunde Onakoya’s 64-hour chess marathon has become a historic moment of national pride. As Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu put it, “Your achievements are a source of pride for Lagos and a reminder that with determination and talent, we can reach all corners of the world.”
