A 25-year-old soldier, Private Yahaya Yunusa, was detained by the Nigerian military in Jaji, Igabi local government area of Kaduna State, for allegedly possessing ammunition.
As reported by SaharaReporters, Yunusa, posted with the 197 Special Forces Battalion in Zamfara State, was apprehended around 11:55 a.m. on Friday while unlawfully carrying 214 rounds of assorted linked ammunition.
The report states that the soldier was found with the prohibited ammunition along with his military ID card and multiple ATM cards from various banks at the time of his arrest.
The seized ammunition reportedly included 50 rounds of 12.7×108mm, 69 rounds of 7.62×54mmR—both linked by chains—35 rounds of unlinked 7.62×54mmR, and 60 rounds of 5.56×45mm.
He also allegedly had in his possession personal ATM cards from Opay, Unity Bank, Access Bank, and First Bank when detained.
Yunusa allegedly admitted during questioning that he had recovered the ammunition during operations, claiming he operated the Anti-Aircraft (AA) machine gun mounted on a military vehicle.
“At approximately 1155 hours on April 18, 2025, Yahaya Yunusa, a 25-year-old military Private, was apprehended in Jaji, Igabi Local Government Area, Kaduna State.
The suspect identified himself as a member of the 197 Special Forces Battalion, Zamfara State,” according to an operational report.
