Just in: Speed Darlington finally released from Kuje prison
Controversial Nigerian artist Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has been released from custody.
Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju announced this news on Tuesday, revealing that Darlington, who is also called Akpi, has exited Kuje Prison.
Posting on X, Adeyanju wrote: “Speed Darlington is out of Kuje Prison.”
Recently, an Abuja court granted Speed Darlington bail.
The Nigeria Police Force eventually succumbed to mounting pressure and brought him before the court.
Before this, Okoye had submitted a petition to DIG Dasuki Galadanchi, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police at the Force Intelligence Bureau in Abuja, regarding his ongoing detention.
In his appeal, Okoye requested that the DIG adhere to a court ruling that questioned the legitimacy of his extended confinement by the police.
The contentious artist had been taken into custody after alleging that Grammy-winning musician Burna Boy was involved in an inappropriate relationship with the troubled American rapper and music mogul Sean Combs, also known as P. Diddy.
However, on December 23, 2024, Justice M.S. Liman issued a directive mandating the police to either formally charge Okoye within 48 hours or release him without conditions.
