Teacher attempts suicide after pupil loses eye to classroom accident in Ogun
The Ogun State Police Command has reported the arrest of a student-teacher accused of causing an 11-year-old girl to suffer injuries that resulted in the loss of her right eye.
The injured child, Alao Idera, is a sixth-grade student at Owiwi Nursery and Primary School located in the Obada Oko region of the state.
According to Daily Post, the teacher, Adeola Adeyemo, is a final-year student at Tai Solarin University of Education in Ijebu Ode, where she is currently completing her teaching practice at the school.
It’s worth noting that in October, a tragic incident occurred when Monday Arijo, a second-year student at Obada Grammar School in the Obada, Idi-emi area, died after a teacher named Azamdjo Elijah allegedly struck him 24 times with a cane and instructed him to perform 162 frog jumps.
In the aftermath of that incident, the teacher was taken into custody, and the school was closed by the state government.
On Tuesday, police spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed to Daily Post that Adeyemo was reportedly holding a cane in the classroom when the sixth-grade pupil ran towards her, resulting in the cane accidentally piercing her right eye.
Odutola added that the victim’s injured eye was surgically removed after she was taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, for medical care.
She stated, “The child was immediately taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta for treatment.
“Following this complaint, the teacher, Adeola Adeyemo, a 400-level student from Tai Solarin University in Ijebu Ode who was on teaching practice, was swiftly arrested and is currently being interrogated.”
Odutola clarified that unlike Arijo, the teacher did not flog the student nor did the student do anything wrong,
She said, “it was simply a situation where the teacher, preparing for an end-of-year party, was holding a cane, as teachers often do.
“However, when the student rushed toward her, the cane accidentally caused injury to the student’s eye.
“The 11-year-old primary six student underwent surgery at the Federal Medical Centre, where her right eye was removed.”
According to Odutola, after realizing that the student’s right eye had been removed, the teacher attempted suicide but was quickly rushed to the hospital where she is currently stable.
