No fewer than 56 people are feared dead after a fan clash at a football match led to a stampede in the city of Nzerekore, Guinea.
On Monday, the government released a statement indicating that the tragic event took place during the final of a local tournament on Sunday afternoon.
The chaos erupted when opposing fans stormed the field in response to a controversial penalty call made by the referee.
Reports suggest that the stampede was triggered when police deployed tear gas in an effort to control the escalating situation.
The government has assured that it will provide necessary care for the injured and has initiated an investigation to identify those responsible for the incident.
Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah took to his X account to urge for calm, emphasizing the importance of allowing hospital services to operate effectively in treating the injured.
“The regional authorities are working to restore calm and serenity among the population. The government is monitoring the development of the situation and reiterates its call for calm so that hospital services are not hindered in providing first aid to the injured.
“The moral authorities of the city are requested to also contribute to the restoration of social tranquillity,” he tweeted.
