Why I won’t leave comedy for movies – Basketmouth
Comedian Bright Okpocha, better known as Basketmouth, has shared his reasons for choosing to stay in the comedy scene rather than venture into movies after making a significant splash in the film industry with his debut feature film, Ghetto Love Story.
In a recent interview with Saturday Beats, the acclaimed comedian discussed his love for filmmaking but also emphasized that comedy is his utmost priority, revealing it as a lifelong dream.
He said, “In actual fact, it’s been a plan all along. I knew I was going to end up in the movies. So when I started comedy, I went to TV, and all along, I knew I was going to end up in movies. I enjoy making movies. So, transitioning was easy because it was already in the plan. I can make it because, by default, I’m already a storyteller based on the fact that I do comedy.”
Okpocha also shared that his film was not made with the intention of making money.
“I didn’t do this movie to make money but to create art and excellence. But if it does, by the grace of God, I’ll make the money back, and if it doesn’t, I’ll challenge myself with this project.”
He also talked about the financial hurdles he faced during production, with costs increasing by 20 percent due to market fluctuations. However, he emphasized his commitment to maintaining quality over budget cuts, saying, “I’d rather push myself to create something extraordinary.”
Okpocha also reassured his fans that comedy remains a top priority for him, with plans for future projects.
“Next year, I’m going on tour. I have my UK and US tours, and I’m going to have my show here in Nigeria,” he stated.
