Bill on diaspora voting passes second reading
The bill to amend the Nigerian Constitution and enable diaspora voting has successfully completed its second reading in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, November 20.
Co-sponsored by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen and Representative Sodeeq Abdullahi, this bill aims to amend the 2022 Electoral Act, creating avenues for Nigerians living overseas to engage in the electoral process.
The bill initially received its second reading in July and was subsequently referred to the Committee on Electoral Matters for further review. Following its successful passage during this week, it has now been directed to the Constitution Amendment Committee for additional legislative action.
If enacted, this amendment would empower Nigerians residing abroad to vote in future elections, a step taken to enhance the inclusion and participation of citizens living overseas in the democratic process.
