Over 971 Nigerians kidnapped in October 2024 – report
No fewer than 971 Nigerians were abducted across the country in October 2024.
This startling revelation comes at a time when a new terror group, ‘Lakurawa,’ has surfaced in the northwestern region.
This data is detailed in the ‘October 2024 Nigeria Security Report’ by Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited (BSIL), a leading security risk management and intelligence consulting firm, and made available to DAILY POST on Tuesday.
The report highlights a concerning trend: there has been a decline in the country’s security metrics, including a rise in abductions and fatalities. This suggests that 2024 could be one of the most perilous years for security performance in over a decade.
The report covers the period from October 1st to 31st, detailing the events that characterized that month, such as violent activities, including killings and kidnappings aimed at ransom by various armed groups, criminal organizations, cults, and ethnic militias, as well as social unrest, including protests and labor actions due to the severe socio-economic conditions and political tensions.
The security firm revealed that data collected indicated that the country recorded a 51% rise in fatalities and 24.42% increase in abductions.
A breakdown of the report according to BEACON INTEL showed Nigeria recorded 861 security incidents, of which 64.92% (559) were attributed to security threats, 24.79% (215) consisted of security forces operations, and 4.99% (43) were attributed to safety incidents from October 1-31, 2024.
The report also highlights the devastating human toll: a total of 1,445 fatalities were recorded, with 67.70% of these due to civilian deaths, 25.89% attributed to criminal activities and non-state armed groups (NSAGs), and 6.40% to casualties involving security forces and 971 cases of abduction.
Additionally, the report reveals that the North East and North West regions have been disproportionately affected by these incidents, accounting for 52.03% and 25.89% of all incidents, respectively, while the South East region recorded the lowest number of incidents at 7.78%.
