Gov Sanwo-Olu denies suing EFCC over alleged arrest, prosecution plans
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has refuted claims of a lawsuit filed against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) regarding planned arrests and prosecutions once his term ends.
This denial was made public by Lawal Pedro, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Lagos State, in a statement issued by Sanwo-Olu’s spokesperson, Gboyega Akosile, on Tuesday.
Pedro’s clarification was issued in response to a report suggesting that Sanwo-Olu’s legal team had initiated a lawsuit to protect fundamental rights against the EFCC before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
However, Attorney General of Lagos, Pedro, has clarified that Governor Sanwo-Olu has not requested any legal counsel to file a lawsuit on his behalf regarding the subject matter in question.
“We need to clarify that Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at no time, sued or briefed any legal practitioner to file a suit on his behalf concerning the above subject matter.
“Also, it is disingenuous for the Governor, who enjoys immunity as conferred on him by the Constitution and has almost three years ahead of him, to brief any lawyer on this kind of matter.
“To the best of my knowledge, my inquiry confirmed that the EFCC is not investigating the governor and has never invited him or threatened arrest of any member of his staff, domestic or otherwise.
“We are currently investigating how the case came to be without our knowledge,” he stated.
As of the time this report was filed, the EFCC has not issued any statement concerning the matter.
