No casualties as two-storey building collapses in Umuahia
A two-story building under construction in Amangwu Ohokobe Ndume, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State has collapsed.
The structure, which had just had its roof installed, came tumbling down late Saturday evening. Fortunately, no workers were inside at the time of the collapse.
The official cause of the building’s collapse has yet to be determined. However, some residents of Amangwu Ohokobe Ndume who spoke to journalists following the incident pointed fingers at substandard materials allegedly used by the site engineer, while others blamed it on inadequate supervision of the construction works.
The residents disclosed that workers were supposed to start on the interior parts of the house immediately after roofing but fortunately, it was postponed to a new date.
“The postponement was the saving grace for the workers because if they were at work when the house collapsed, who knows what would have happened to them?” Nkechi, a resident of Ohokobe said.
She added that the site Engineer had gone underground after the incident.
Meanwhile, a three-story building under construction collapsed in June in Obingwu, Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia, resulting in the tr@gic de@th of five workers on the site.
