Two arrested over sale of newborn twins in Lagos
Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have apprehended Ujunwa Una and Chinelo Igbechionwu, both identified as ‘f’s, on charges of conspiracy and child trafficking.
The duo was captured by patrol officers from the Ojodu Division, stationed at the Berger bus stop, which serves as an entry point into Lagos State.
They were apprehended after receiving a tip from a Good Samaritan. Upon their arrest, the suspects were discovered with two newborn baby girls, who were approximately six days old, en route from Abia State on September 9, 2024.
Further investigation uncovered that the suspects were on their way to hand over the babies to a nurse in Lagos State, on the condition that the mother would connect them with her once they reached the city.
During questioning, the suspects admitted to their involvement in the crime, revealing that they were paid a sum of One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (₦150,000) for the safe transport of the babies to Lagos.
They further disclosed that the mother of the babies had sold them due to her inability to provide proper care.
The spokesperson for the command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed to the newsmen that the case had been transferred to the Gender Unit of the Command, where the newborns were placed under the care of a motherless babies home for proper care and medical evaluation.
Hundeyin mentioned that while the investigation into the case continues, the arrested suspects were arraigned on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
