Lady bags 8 years jail for human trafficking in Ghana
A 28-year-old Nigerian woman, Favour Ugwe, has been sentenced to eight years of hard labor in Ghana for human trafficking.
She was found guilty on Thursday, September 19, of trafficking a 19-year-old woman from Chad, subjecting her to exploitation in Ghana.
The court also mandated that she pay GH¢5,000 as compensation to the victim, according to Starrfm.
Ugwe admitted to recruiting the victim from Abuja, Nigeria, with the help of another Nigerian man, and arranging her transportation to Ghana.
Her Honour Mrs. Akosua Anokyewaa Adjepong, who presided over the case, noted Ugwe’s lack of remorse during the trial and the widespread issue of human trafficking in the country as factors in her decision.
Additionally, the court considered Ugwe’s first-time offense, her age, and the duration of her sentence.
In a video shared online, Ugwe can be seen crying as security officers escorted her away from the courthouse.
